What is xtra xtra?
xtra xtra is a free hyperlocal website that allows you to search for and share information in your community. The site combines the familiarity of a hometown newspaper with the capabilities of current technology to bring users the news that they care about most. xtra xtra is your source for news, announcements, events, milestones and photos in your community. Do I have to sign up?
No. You can view community news, milestones, events and photos on the site without registration.
If I don’t have to sign up, why should I?
To reduce spam and ensure the safety of the site, users must complete a simple registration to add content to the site. Only registered users can share milestones and photos, receive email notifications, use the “share” and “favorite” features, and comment on posts.
Is it free? What’s the catch?
There is no catch! xtra xtra is 100% free of charge. We do link to some third parties that may have their own fees, but the content created by our users is completely free!
Why isn’t there any content in my community?
xtra xtra relies on user-created content, so if there is nothing posted yet in your town it just means that you can be the first! We are working hard to spread the word about the site, but we need your help. You can get things started in your area by creating a post and sending it to friends or mentioning the site to someone who has a milestone to share. Ultimately, the site should be a reflection of your community, so get involved!
How is this different from Facebook?
At xtra xtra, we are not looking to connect you with a bunch of individuals; Facebook already does a great job with that. Rather, we aim to connect you with any number of your favorite communities and schools, the ones that are meaningful to you. You’ll find stories you care about without joining a network or maintaining a friends list. It also gives you the opportunity to reach beyond your social network. You could read about your childhood friend’s mother, your old neighbors, teachers, and others you have lost touch with.
What if I don’t have anything to post?
You can still participate! If you don’t have a “milestone” to post at the moment, you can share a photo in the local photos section of the site. You can also read and comment on other posts to express your congratulations or condolences where necessary. Suggest the site to a friend or family member who has something to post; it’s a great way to share their news!
What are email notifications and how do I sign up?
Once you have registered with xtra xtra, you can sign up for email notifications to be alerted when new milestones are posted to your school or community. Simply click “Receive Email Notifications” when on the page of any town or school to have the latest news delivered right to your inbox. You can manage the frequency and number of these notifications in the My Account section.
