By presswatch

May 10, 2010--Nick Argento, a 27-year veteran of BC High's Social Studies department, was selected as this year's recipient of the George Watson Award for Excellence in Teaching Economics. Given by the Massachusetts Council for the Social Studies (MCSS), the George Watson Award is presented each year to one educator in Massachusetts who has demonstrated exceptional ability in teaching economics, who shows strong evidence of professional involvement, and who serves as a positive role model for colleagues.

Argento began his career at BC High in 1983, soon after graduating from Holy Cross College in Worcester, MA. In addition to his work in the classroom teaching Economics, Global History, and Modern World History, Argento is the faculty moderator of BC High's Model United Nations Club, and a faculty advisor for the McElroy Scholars, a program that identifies 17 students each year for an intensive diet of academic support. He is also the head coach of the freshman soccer and freshman baseball teams.

In a letter announcing Argento's selection, MCSS Award Chair Steven W. Goode wrote, "Your hard work and dedication to the teaching of economics reflects the true preparation needed to prepare students for the future. In the words of Arne Duncan, U.S. Secretary of Education, 'talent matters and teachers should be rewarded in education for their talents and leadership.' You are the paradigm of excellence that he is talking about for the future of education in America."

Argento received his award at the MCSS annual banquet on May 7.
