Women's Hockey - Northeastern 4, New Hampshire 0
A four-goal third period, including a pair of strikes from sophomore forward Rachel Llanes, propelled the No. 10 Northeastern Huskies past the New Hampshire Wildcats, 4-0, on Wednesday night.
It is the first win in regulation for Northeastern (10-3-4, 3-2-3 WHEA) at New Hampshire (8-8-0, 2-6-0 WHEA) since Jan. 21, 2001, when the Huskies won, 2-1.
The first three goals came within a 2:29 span, with the second and third tallies coming a mere 11 seconds apart. Llanes’ goals bookended the offensive outburst, with senior co-captain Julia Marty and freshman forward Katie MacSorley supplying the second and third tallies, respectively. All four goals came at even strength, as both teams were 0-for-2 on the power play.
Junior Florence Schelling shined once again for the Huskies, as she turned aside 22 shots, including 10 in the first period, to earn her third shutout of the season. She has allowed just two goals in the last three games.
Llanes began the scoring at the 3:18 mark of the third period when she potted a goal past New Hampshire goaltender Lindsey Minton (25 saves) to make it 1-0. Sophomores Casie Fields and Casey Pickett combined on the assists.
Marty was the next Husky to light the lamp, as she tallied an unassisted goal, her second of the season, at the 5:36 mark of the stanza. MacSorley took a Maggie DiMasi feed and slotted it past Minton for her team-leading 11th goal of the season 11 seconds later.
Llanes closed the Huskies’ scoring account at the 11:47 juncture when she notched her eighth goal of the season to make it 4-0. Senior co-captain Alyssa Wohlfeiler added the assist.
The Huskies will close out their 2010 portion of the schedule on Tuesday, Dec. 7 when they head down Commonwealth Ave. to battle the No. 5 Boston University Terriers at Walter Brown Arena. The puck is scheduled to drop at 7 p.m.
