Chefs Challenge Each Other via Twitter to Compete for Charity and Bragging Rights!

WHAT: Social media can be used for several purposes… like sharing pictures of that new baby, inviting people to barbeques, stalking your ex's, etc. But let's face it, beyond feeding into our voyeuristic nature, it is best used as a tool to taunt others online. Our story starts off innocently enough, offline, on Thursday, June 30th, 2011 in what seemed like a normal food and wine cook-off event at Gordon's Fine Wine & Culinary Center in Waltham, MA. On the bill for the evening was Paul Turano from Tryst Restaurant vs. Andy Husbands from Tremont 647 slated for a head-to-head cook-off. What made this evening different than any other was that, unbeknownst to Chef Turano, Chef Husbands arrived with a second hired gun at his side, Chef Brian Poe from Poe's Kitchen at the Rattlesnake, to assist. Feeling a bit ambushed, but focused, Turano proceeded to cook course after course battling the two talented Boston chefs, and though outnumbered, Chef Turano won.

This is normally where the story would end. That is unless you "Tweet" about it. The next morning Chef Husbands cleverly tweeted "beat @trystrestaurant, rematch!" leaving the outcome of the event obtuse and open to interpretation, which sparked an exchange between Gordons and the chefs. Chef Jason Bond of Bondir Restaurant stepped up after seeing the exchange on Twitter, and offered to partner with Turano in a rematch. The team will now face off against Husbands and Poe in the “Battle of the Heavyweights” at Gordon's Fine Wine & Culinary Center on Tuesday, October 25th, 2011 at 6:30PM. Tickets are $100 per person and include a three course meal (x2!) and paired wines from Ninety+ Cellars.

To up the ante, a portion of proceeds for the dinner will go the winning chef's charity. Husband's and Poe are cooking for Share our Strength, a national nonprofit that seeks to end childhood hunger in America, by improving the access that families all across the country have to healthy, affordable food and by working at the state and city level. Bond & Turano are cooking for The Jimmy Fund Clinic, one of the world's premier centers for pediatric cancer research and treatment, and an organization that hits very close to home for Turano and his family.
